During the REACH(c) professional development session, the consultant visited ELA teachers in their classrooms, along with the assistant principal. The visits allowed the consultant to observe how teachers were providing instruction and understanding the implementation of the argument-based essay unit.

We decided that there was some confusion around the extent by which teachers should use the students' on-demand writing.  The on-demand writing should be used for assessment only.  Several teachers decided to re-launch the beginning of the unit, while others decided they would return to the work they conducted with their students prior to re-launching the on-demand portion of the unit.

During the REACH(c) professional development session, the consultant worked with 6th and 8th grade ELA teachers.  The sessions focused on clarifying ways to launch argument-based essays.  We learned that some teachers launched the on-demand writing with their classes, but there was a consensus that, in general, students struggled with the content and concept of the new unit.

We decided that most of the teachers would re-launch the on-demand lesson because the teachers believed the quality of the students' on-demand responses were negatively impacted by the students struggle with the concept.  The suggestion from REACH(c) was to have the students participate in a debate based on the poem The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

During the REACH(c) professional development session, all 6th - 8th grade ELA teachers met to discuss the curriculum and units of study.  We learned that the writing units of study are not explicitly aligned to the Expeditionary Learning ELA modules. We also learned that each grade is expected to begin the school year focused on varying units of study.

We decided to create a mini-unit of study focused on personal narrative that all ELA teachers could launch and support each other around.  We also decided the following:

  • All students will engage in an on-demand writing assessment on Tuesday, September 13th.
  • There are 14 days of instruction for the mini-unit, one of which will be a free day for teachers to differentiate to address the needs of their students.
  • Students will be partnered based on the results of their assessments.
  • The publishing date for the mini-unit will be October 14th.
  • After the initial mini-unit, the 6th grade teachers will conduct an additional bend of writer's workshop, 7th grade teachers will embark on informational text, and 8th grade teachers will begin the memoir unit.
